Culture as Cognition and Behavior: How Categorization Can Shape Interaction (and How Leaders Can Shape Categorization?)

چکیده
For decades, economists paid minuscule attention to culture, but this is changing rapidly. One view of culture emphasizes “values that ethnic, religious, and social groups transmit fairly unchanged from generation to generation” (Guiso et al., 2006: 23), and one way to model such values is to enrich the arguments of an actor’s utility function to include actions by others in the actor’s social context (e.g., Hoff and Stiglitz, 2016).

متن کاملDevelopment of Abstract Categories in Embodied Agents
In this paper we demonstrate how a neuro-robot situated in an environment containing parallelepiped objects that vary in shape, size, and orientation can develop an ability to recognize and label the category of the objects and generalize to new objects. The analysis of the dynamical system constituted by the robot and the environment in interaction allowed us to understand how adapted agents s...
متن کاملDynamic Categorization of Semantics of Fashion Language: A Memetic Approach
Categories are not invariant. This paper attempts to explore the dynamic nature of semantic category, in particular, that of fashion language, based on the cognitive theory of Dawkins’ memetics, a new theory of cultural evolution. Semantic attributes of linguistic memes decrease or proliferate in replication and spreading, which involves a dynamic development of semantic category. More specific...
متن کاملPart-whole categorization is culture-specific
We present two experiments on the role of culture in the categorization of object part-whole structures. A triadic categorization task pitted shape against function as factors driving similarity judgments on selected parts of different types of objects. Speakers of American English were significantly more likely than speakers of two indigenous languages of Mexico, Tseltal Maya and Isthmus Zapot...
متن کاملEffects of category learning on the stimulus selectivity of macaque inferior temporal neurons.
Primates can learn to categorize complex shapes, but as yet it is unclear how this categorization learning affects the representation of shape in visual cortex. Previous studies that have examined the effect of categorization learning on shape representation in the macaque inferior temporal (IT) cortex have produced diverse and conflicting results that are difficult to interpret owing to inadeq...
